March Madness 2015

Outside of Christmas, March Madness is the most wonderful time of the for College Basketball fans across the nation.  As March Madness 2014 falls upon us, fans will become involved in the electrifying action on the hardwood, engulfed in their tourney brackets as they wait to see who the kings of the court will be for the season.

I love March Madness, even though at times my busted brackets have turned the season into “March Sadness” for me.  Even with my disappointments, my brackets usually fare pretty well in the end.  This year I’m praying my bracket slays like Katniss Everdeen in the 75th Quarter Quell.  If you’ve never completed a tourney bracket before, here are my few tips:

  • Although you may be inclined to pick number 1 seeds to go all the way, be careful.  The last time all number 1 seeds filled the Final Four slots was in 2008.
  • Do your homework; pay attention to predictions, look at how teams performed in their conference tournaments AND how they played in the regular season.  Read blogs, make ESPN your friend, and take a look at what analysts have to say about teams and matchups.
  • Don’t be afraid of upsets, there are ALWAYS upsets in the tourney.  Switch it up a little bit, and I do mean a little bit.  This is where doing your homework comes in handy.  How did the teams perform offensively?  Defensively?  Who did they beat in their regular season?  How are they ranked (a 16 or 15 seed against a number 1, not highly probable)?  Be careful, but don’t be afraid.
  • Last but not least, have fun!  The odds of you having a perfect bracket are something like 128 billion to 1.  Don’t let your busted brackets make you uptight; get loose, it’s a celebration!  If you can’t make it to the games, get out with other fans and attend watch parties!  Head down to your local bars and pubs to catch the action and get involved.  You can also get competitive with co-workers, friends and family by creating or joining pools, or giving a prize to the person with the best bracket at the end.

This year I’m so torn.  Wichita State has a strong possibility of playing Kansas.  As many people know I am a Wichita State Alumni but I LOVE KU basketball.  We will have to see what happens, Wichita State is a bit lean when it comes to the post.  If Perry Ellis for KU comes back at 100, it may be a problem.   I have developed a few outcomes; I’m excited to see what happens!  Brackets close this afternoon so there isn’t much time!

Let the games begin, and in the words of Effie Trinket “May the odds be ever in your favor!”

Have you made a bracket yet?  Who do you have going all the way?  Talk to us 🙂
