Somewhat recently, the internets went nuts at the release of a video of Snarky Puppy Feat. Lalah Hathaway, as she sang chords on the song “Something.” I don’t know how many times I repeated this song, but I was completely blown. Of course, Ms. Hathaway was awesome; if you didn’t try to sing chords after watching that video you just aren’t a regular human being lol. Anyway, I was beyond impressed with the band’s arrangement and composition of the song. This was my first time hearing Snarky Puppy, and with that one song they made an instant fan. Imagine my disappointment when I investigated the band and performances deeper, and found that there were more dope songs all available on an album, and IAENO it! I told my sister about it, and she was all like “Oh yeah I already have the album, that’s what we musicians do, we listen to dope ish.” Well why didn’t anyone tell me about it?
The album features live performances, from artists that the band performed with during their Family Dinner series in New York. There is also a very good cause behind the album. The album was recorded at the Jefferson Center, which is home to the Music Lab in Roanoke, VA. The Music Lab is an institution that exposes youth in the area to the performing arts. A few of the students were allowed to make appearances at the live recording to showcase their talents. All of the proceeds of the album will go towards the Music lab and Jefferson Center, and there is also a DVD which includes the appearances of the Music Lab students. If I wasn’t convinced to purchase the album before, that sealed the deal. I purchased the album, and I am completely in love. If you love music, and support giving back to our youth PLEASE get this album AND the DVD (if you haven’t already).
Take a look at 12-year-old Jayna Brown from the Music Lab as she sings a song she co-wrote, called “I’ll Do Me.” Music Lab’s Gabriel Morales, age 15 is on the guitar. Enjoy 🙂
